Letter to Rand Beers, Secretary of Homeland Security - Typhoon Haiyan and Temporary Protected Status

Letter

In the wake of the suffering and destruction in the Philippines as a result of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, joins a bipartisan group of 28 Members of Congress calling on the Administration to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Filipino nationals currently in the U.S. After signing on to a letter yesterday to Rand Beers, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Congressman Becerra released the following statement:

"I stand with Filipino Americans here in Los Angeles and across the country as the people of the Philippines persevere during this challenging time. Given the widespread destruction and difficult conditions in the Philippines, Filipino nationals here in the U.S. would be unable to return home safely. Our government has granted Temporary Protected Status to foreign nationals during past humanitarian disasters and I join my colleagues in asking the Administration to take similar steps in aiding the Filipino people."
